User Interface Design Trends

I thought that I’d write about and reflect on some of the latest UI (User Interface) design trends that I’ve been looking at over the last year. I’ve kept this pretty brief to give just a flavour and provoke thought on these design principles.

Here they are in no particular order:

Responsive Design
This is now a design must have for websites, designing for and applying a responsive layout means that all of your content is accessible at all times on all devices. A lot of content management systems (CMS) themes are moving to a “mobile first” design which reflects the increasing user trend of mobile and tablet access on the move.

Flat UIs
Using solid bold colour as apposed to multiple images to add texture to the UI is much more common place. Advances in css (cascading style sheets) has brought more capability to designers with improved modern browsers enhancing the overall user experience for all users.

Minimal Design
User focused uncluttered clean design by the use of minimalist design and layout has helped users find what they need on clear, well designed user interfaces. Good use of white space helps keep content ordered and user friendly.

Video Content
With increased band width and device capability the rise of video content marches on. Accessing videos on the web is now accepted and increasing. As a marketing tool video content can get the required message across in seconds and can be far more engaging than blocks of text and images.

Typography
Custom typography is no longer a web designer’s dream, efficient custom cross-browser fonts are a great way to lift your UI designs. Once impossible and now a very welcome reality I would recommend that these are used and enjoyed on your website.

Compact Sidebars
Mixing page templates to match content is a great way to add different layouts to your website. The traditional sidebar still has a place but using variations such as more compact sidebars or no sidebars can give a better user experience.

SVG Animations
Flash is dead, long live web animation. Light weight SVG (scalable vector graphics) are a good, device friendly way to add animation to your website. You can add movement to your pages to give emphasis to content and engage your audience.

One Page Design
Once frowned on but now accepted the one page website can deliver efficient content. Good navigation is really key to this style of web design but if done correctly its great for SEO (search engine optimisation) to help your website be found amongst the competition.

All of the above is not exhaustive and only in my opinion as a UI designer and developer.

In general the world of user interface design is making good use of the latest web technology with some nice clean design trends. It is good to see and all of the above lifts the industry as a whole.
