Responsive Web Design

wordpressAnother day, another WordPress web design project and I’ve been looking at the latest WordPress themes. One major consideration is responsive web design as it is a must for multi-device access requirements.

Our new client wants the new website’s users to be able to view their new WordPress website on a number of ways including tablet and mobile devices.

Responsive design is a must have now and if your website isn’t mobile and tablet friendly we recommend that you look at this to keep your users engaged. This will help your user experience and ensure that your audience keeps coming back!

UI Design Concepts

I’ve been working on some new WordPress themes recently for freelance work proof of concept.  This has given me the chance to work in some UI (user interface) design concepts that have inspired me.

I’m going to release some mockups over the next few weeks and I invite comment on the design priciples that I’ve used. Watch this space for more design ideas…

User Interface Design Trends

I thought that I’d write about and reflect on some of the latest UI (User Interface) design trends that I’ve been looking at over the last year. I’ve kept this pretty brief to give just a flavour and provoke thought on these design principles.

Here they are in no particular order:

Responsive Design
This is now a design must have for websites, designing for and applying a responsive layout means that all of your content is accessible at all times on all devices. A lot of content management systems (CMS) themes are moving to a “mobile first” design which reflects the increasing user trend of mobile and tablet access on the move.

Flat UIs
Using solid bold colour as apposed to multiple images to add texture to the UI is much more common place. Advances in css (cascading style sheets) has brought more capability to designers with improved modern browsers enhancing the overall user experience for all users.

Minimal Design
User focused uncluttered clean design by the use of minimalist design and layout has helped users find what they need on clear, well designed user interfaces. Good use of white space helps keep content ordered and user friendly.

Video Content
With increased band width and device capability the rise of video content marches on. Accessing videos on the web is now accepted and increasing. As a marketing tool video content can get the required message across in seconds and can be far more engaging than blocks of text and images.

Typography
Custom typography is no longer a web designer’s dream, efficient custom cross-browser fonts are a great way to lift your UI designs. Once impossible and now a very welcome reality I would recommend that these are used and enjoyed on your website.

Compact Sidebars
Mixing page templates to match content is a great way to add different layouts to your website. The traditional sidebar still has a place but using variations such as more compact sidebars or no sidebars can give a better user experience.

SVG Animations
Flash is dead, long live web animation. Light weight SVG (scalable vector graphics) are a good, device friendly way to add animation to your website. You can add movement to your pages to give emphasis to content and engage your audience.

One Page Design
Once frowned on but now accepted the one page website can deliver efficient content. Good navigation is really key to this style of web design but if done correctly its great for SEO (search engine optimisation) to help your website be found amongst the competition.

All of the above is not exhaustive and only in my opinion as a UI designer and developer.

In general the world of user interface design is making good use of the latest web technology with some nice clean design trends. It is good to see and all of the above lifts the industry as a whole.

User Experience

I’m working on a talk that I’m going to be presenting on user experience for the local Chamber of Commerce. My talk will be pretty broad and pitched at SME level for local business and company owners.

My talk is going to cover discovering who your audience is and building personas to get a feel for the target users and market. I’ll also be highlighting good practice in UI (user interface) Design and how your users can find what they need on your website.

It’s great being able to speak about what I do and love on a daily basis and I hope to inspire the candidates to give an improved user experience for their audience!

WordPress Web Design Re-Fresh

Starting the mock-ups for the latest Adur Design website re-fresh, this website has out grown the owners requirements and it needs a design re-fresh.

The brief also includes er-structuring the website with architecture changes to reflect the new design. This will result in a much better user experience and present a much easier to use website.

A WordPress web design re-fresh is something that we really enjoy getting to grips with so if you would like use to look at your website just get in touch as we’re happy to help!

WordPress Website Re-development

Working on another WordPress website re-development project scope, this site needs some work and WordPress development to bring it up to date. I’ve also been asked to quote for an e-commerce solution which will enable online product ordering.

Its a good process to work through with the aim of bringing the best online solution to the client’s web presence. I’ll write more on the web project scope process as its an essential part of any re-development project.

As ever WordPress comes up trumps as a flexible web development platform.

Website Design Re-Fresh

I’m continuing work on another website design re-fresh, this brings a fresh look and feel to websites and it’s a fairly painless operation. Following a consultation a new design is produced based on any new branding or images that you would like to bring to your website.

Once completed the new design is applied to your existing website and a new look and feel is bought to your website!

We’ve recently completed a website re-fresh for Alan Hills, this is a WordPress website which we redesigned and developed using Css and images.

Website Re-design

We’ve recently completed some website design re-fresh work for Alan Hills, the scope was to introduce colour, graphics and a new logo to a stark, very white website.

Working to a new design, created by Ant at Adur Design, the new code and images were quickly added to this WordPress website to give Alan a new look and feel for his Sussex based personal and business coaching business.

Alan was very pleased with our work, read his testimonial on our web portfolio page, you can also review Alan’s website at alanhills.com.

Bootstrap Responsive WordPress Theme

Working on one of our latest WordPress builds and I’m developing the theme that I’m going to use with Bootstrap which will give me a responsive website that will adapt to the users device.

A positive user experience is all important and I’ve found this very helpful article which has helped this project on a WordPress Bootstrap Theme which is worth a read.
