New UI Designs

Just continuing work on a UI (user interface) re-design for an established brand e-commerce website which is going well. Initial work has been carried out to adjust the header elements using custom Css coding and to clear up the footer area for the website.

The website’s page templates are now being addressed to improve the user experience through cleaner design. Work is now being carried out to the home page with the section landing pages and product pages edits to complete the project.

I’ll post up the case study here once the work is completed which will result in a refreshed website and an improved user experience.

Why is User Experience Important?

User Experience in web design has risen in importance over recent years. User Experience or UX is the study, design and effort made by a website owner to give a website’s user the best possible experience whilst visiting their website.

So why is this so important? A good user experience will leave a good impression with a user and help to retain the user to look around and take in a website rather than leave quickly and probably never return. A good user experience also helps to build brand loyalty and development trust with a company or service provider.

Mobile friendly, responsive design is a must with a very high percentage of user traffic viewing your site on the move you have to provide a good mobile user experience. If your site is not mobile friendly we urge you to address this quickly, non-mobile friendly sites are now being ranked down in searches so be aware!

A positive user experience also can make life easy for a user so that they can find what they want on your website with clear navigation. Also having clearly labeled and easy to find buttons can help user to buy products on an e-commerce website.

So all of the above add up to keep your site in business, informing your audience and selling your products. If you would like more input on your website’s user experience and how we can help you don’t hesitate to call 07732 614914 or use our contact page to get in touch get in touch!

Responsive Web Design

Responsive design is a popular topic in the web design world at the moment and the importance of having a responsive website has dramatically increased in importance this year. You may be surprised to hear what percentage of users are accessing your website on mobile devices but this is a trend that is only going to grow.

wordpress responsive web designWordPress were an early adopter of the “mobile first” approach and have been working that way with theme development for some time. So if your website is already built on WordPress and you are using a recent, modern theme your site is probably already “mobile friendly”. Without getting too technical a theme means a collection of files and images which give your website style, colour and images.

But why is a mobile friendly website important?

Well a user could really struggle to view an older website on a mobile device which will probably lead to them leaving to view a more viewable website and may never return to yours. Also Google have started to rank down sites that are not mobile friendly, this means that unless you are using a mobile friendly theme your website will appear lower in search results than more modern mobile friendly websites.

To clarify, mobile friendly means that your website can be viewed on mobile devices which include tablets and mobile phones. If your target audience will probably be using mobile devices to view websites then this will be an issue for you. You can find out really easily by submitting your website for a free review to Google, just follow this link to Google’s mobile friendly test and submit your websites address.

Responsive Web Design – Why Is This Important?

There have been some developments in the web industry recently, some search engines are ranking down websites that are not responsive and usable on multiple devices.

This means that unless your website has a responsive design and is easily usable on mobile and tablet devices this will directly effect where your website appears in searches. This is now termed as “mobile friendly” and has caused mixed feelings but overall it makes for a better user experience for mobile users which is now the fastest growing web audience.

Google in particular are putting mobile users first and another factor to take into account is page load speed which includes optimised images, these are small file sizes which download quickly. You can see how your website is doing by entering the url (web address) into Google’s mobile friendly test.

Responsive Web Design

wordpressAnother day, another WordPress web design project and I’ve been looking at the latest WordPress themes. One major consideration is responsive web design as it is a must for multi-device access requirements.

Our new client wants the new website’s users to be able to view their new WordPress website on a number of ways including tablet and mobile devices.

Responsive design is a must have now and if your website isn’t mobile and tablet friendly we recommend that you look at this to keep your users engaged. This will help your user experience and ensure that your audience keeps coming back!

User Interface Design Trends

I thought that I’d write about and reflect on some of the latest UI (User Interface) design trends that I’ve been looking at over the last year. I’ve kept this pretty brief to give just a flavour and provoke thought on these design principles.

Here they are in no particular order:

Responsive Design
This is now a design must have for websites, designing for and applying a responsive layout means that all of your content is accessible at all times on all devices. A lot of content management systems (CMS) themes are moving to a “mobile first” design which reflects the increasing user trend of mobile and tablet access on the move.

Flat UIs
Using solid bold colour as apposed to multiple images to add texture to the UI is much more common place. Advances in css (cascading style sheets) has brought more capability to designers with improved modern browsers enhancing the overall user experience for all users.

Minimal Design
User focused uncluttered clean design by the use of minimalist design and layout has helped users find what they need on clear, well designed user interfaces. Good use of white space helps keep content ordered and user friendly.

Video Content
With increased band width and device capability the rise of video content marches on. Accessing videos on the web is now accepted and increasing. As a marketing tool video content can get the required message across in seconds and can be far more engaging than blocks of text and images.

Typography
Custom typography is no longer a web designer’s dream, efficient custom cross-browser fonts are a great way to lift your UI designs. Once impossible and now a very welcome reality I would recommend that these are used and enjoyed on your website.

Compact Sidebars
Mixing page templates to match content is a great way to add different layouts to your website. The traditional sidebar still has a place but using variations such as more compact sidebars or no sidebars can give a better user experience.

SVG Animations
Flash is dead, long live web animation. Light weight SVG (scalable vector graphics) are a good, device friendly way to add animation to your website. You can add movement to your pages to give emphasis to content and engage your audience.

One Page Design
Once frowned on but now accepted the one page website can deliver efficient content. Good navigation is really key to this style of web design but if done correctly its great for SEO (search engine optimisation) to help your website be found amongst the competition.

All of the above is not exhaustive and only in my opinion as a UI designer and developer.

In general the world of user interface design is making good use of the latest web technology with some nice clean design trends. It is good to see and all of the above lifts the industry as a whole.

User Experience

I’m working on a talk that I’m going to be presenting on user experience for the local Chamber of Commerce. My talk will be pretty broad and pitched at SME level for local business and company owners.

My talk is going to cover discovering who your audience is and building personas to get a feel for the target users and market. I’ll also be highlighting good practice in UI (user interface) Design and how your users can find what they need on your website.

It’s great being able to speak about what I do and love on a daily basis and I hope to inspire the candidates to give an improved user experience for their audience!
